| Description | This volume consists of 32 sheets measuring approximately 32cm x 25cm, extracted from Hilda Margaret Whitaker née Hodge's artist's sketch book, mounted onto sugar paper and presented in an artist's portfolio. The first 2 pages feature pencil sketches of events at the Malayan Teachers' Training College: a First Year Parade and a Chinese New Year Dragon Dance, both with pencil annotations. The remaining 30 pages of sketches concern preparatory sketches for 'Tijah, Mat dan Nor', executed in pencil and ink and featuring figurative studies, facial studies, sketches of costume, expressions of movement and a Malayan house with fine detail. Some of the sketches are annotated with instructional notes on the colours and media to be employed in the final work. There is also an explanatory note, written by Margaret's' daughter as she curated the volume, inserted in the front pocket of the portfolio. |
