| Description | This series concerns Hilda Margaret Whitaker née Hodge's commission to produce artwork for 'Tijah, Mat dan Nor', written in Malay by A. A. Goodchild and Abdul Kuddus bin Mohammed and published by the Department of Education, Federation of Malaya in 1955 for use as a class reader. This work was undertaken by Margaret during her time at the Malayan Teachers' Training College, Kirkby. The series includes a copy of the book, draft artworks and correspondence plus a catalogue with biographical details compiled by Margaret's daughter. Many draft proofs were produced as the combination of colour, hairstyles and clothing depicted in the images were refined and agreed upon between artist and commissioners. A number of proofs and original drafts by Margaret Whitaker and not used in the final publication are held in the collection and for context, these illustrations should be viewed in combination with the catalogue prepared by Margaret's daughter and the published copy of 'Tijah, Mat dan Nor'. |
