| Description | This album contains mounted photographic studies of a visit to Sulawesi made by Margaret Whitaker in 1989. The colour photographs feature local people engaged in everyday activities, plants and flowers, animals and the funeral rites of the people of Torajaland (a 2 page magazine advertisement for an airline which outlines the rites is loosely inserted to the back of the album). Affixed to the inside front cover is a map of the Indonesian archipelago and a magazine article, 'Introducing Indonesia' copyright asserted by Garuda Indonesia. The album also contains mounted sketches by Margaret Whitaker: 'Franco in Butterfly creation' drawn in pencil; a pencil sketch of the Golden Maccassar Hotel Orchestra; a mounted watercolour and ink sketch of a motorised fishing boat, or ujung pandang and a pencil study of funeral guests and offerings, Torajaland, which includes a sacrificial pig. Additionally, a map of Torajaland has been glued into the back of the album, along with a pencil sketch of a young girl and the padi harvest at Toraja village, also by Margaret Whitaker. |
