TitleJourneying in Wonderment and Discovery: post Tijah, Mat dan Nur
DescriptionHilda Margaret Whitaker née Hodge visited Malaysia for the first time in 1987, when not only was she reunited with many of her students from the Malayan Teachers' Training College, Kirkby, but she was able to experience first hand Malaysian culture, which inspired many sketches, drawings and paintings that reflected her observations and experiences. She later explored Thailand (Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia and Thailand) in 1989 and subsequently joined an expedition with the Sumatran Field Studies Council, which took her back to Malaysia and Indonesia, where she immersed herself in exploring the mangrove swamps, forests and bat caves, often on foot. This selection of sketch books and photographic studies, kept intact, represents a body of her work in which she strove to record and document her experiences as she travelled throughout South East Asia.
