DescriptionPapers, correspondence, architectural plans and photographs related to C.F. Mott College. Also known as C.F. Mott College of Education, C.F. Mott Training College, C.F. Mott College of Higher Education, and as the C.F. Mott Wing of the City of Liverpool College of Higher Education (COLCHE). The college would eventually be incorporated into Liverpool Polytechnic, which became Liverpool John Moores University in 1993.
C.F. Mott College was opened in 1946, with around 24 students as a women-only institution. Initially, student and staff hostels were on the Kirkby Trading Estate, with classes taking place at Leamington Road School and the Florence Melly School, before relocating to the Hazels (or Red Hazels) in late 1947/early 1948. The 'huts' that were used for accommodation in Kirkby were later used for the men's Emergency Teacher Training College (see GB1076.KTC) and the Malayan Teacher Training College (GB1076.MTTC). The college expanded rapidly as a campus and in terms of student numbers. In 1959, the decision was made to admit male students. The 1960s saw an expansion of courses on offer to students, with the range of degree courses continuing to broaden through the 1970s.
C.F. Mott and the Ethel Wormald colleges were linked together in 1975, eventually becoming COLCHE in 1978. C.F. Mott College formally ceased to function on 31 December 1979, although continued as a COLCHE campus until 1983 when it became part of Liverpool Polytechnic. The former C.F. Mott College campus then remained a Polytechnic campus until its final closure in 1988.
