TitlePapers relating to the War Charities Act
DescriptionBundle of papers and correspondence relating to the War Charities Act. Includes: government circulars, regulations and a poster about the War Charities Act, 1916; blank application forms for registration and exemption in the matter of the War Charities Act; blank War Charities exemption and registration certificates; correspondence from the Charity Commission regarding the War Charities Act; letter from British Insulated and Helsby Cables Ltd., with a list of their War Relief Fund Committee members (January 1917), and a further letter confirming the discontinuation of their War Relief Fund (May 1925); and three unused, printed envelopes addressed to the Charity Commission.
Also included are some completed War Charities Application and Exemption Forms, for the following charities:
- British Insulated and Helsby Cables Employees War Relief Fund, Prescot, to aid those who have suffered through the War and to make grants for charitable and other objects at the discretion of the Committee (established 11 August 1914, applied for registration 21 October 1916);
- Social and Dance Charity, raising money for wounded soldiers at the Whiston Institute for Christmas comforts (established 10 November 1917, applied for exemption from registration 7 November 1917);
- British Prisoners of War, for the maintenance of Prescot men who are prisoners of war in Germany (established 1 February 1918, applied for registration 1 February 1918);
- Prescot Branch of the National Federation of Discharged and Demob Sailors and Soldiers, to assist all needy cases of ex-service men, widows, orpahns and dependents (established May 1918, applied for registration 16 February 1920);
- a charity to raise money for the widow and family of late Captain Vidler, of Prescot, who died shortly after returning home from serving in France (established 29 March 1918, applied for exemption from registration 28 March 1918).
